About this training

The Sphere Project was launched in 1997 by a group of humanitarian professionals aiming to improve the quality of assistance provided to people affected by disasters and to enhance the accountability of the humanitarian system. The training focuses on operationalizing these globally recognized standards in the field.

A standard Sphere training course breaks down the handbook's core philosophy and its practical applications.

Participants learn to navigate and implement three main frameworks:

  1. The Humanitarian Charter: The foundational document establishing the legal and ethical framework of humanitarian action, primarily the right to life with dignity, the right to receive humanitarian assistance, and the right to protection and security.
  2. The Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS): Nine commitments that organizations use to improve the quality and effectiveness of the assistance they provide.
  3. Protection Principles: Guidelines to ensure that humanitarian actors avoid causing further harm and actively promote the safety and rights of affected populations.
