Introduction to WASH Training

Strengthening Humanitarian WASH Capacity for Effective Response

Water, sanitation and hygiene sit at the centre of almost every humanitarian
response. When water systems fail and sanitation breaks down, disease follows
faster than almost any other threat a displaced population faces — and the staff
asked to respond are often not WASH specialists by training.

This two-day introduction was built for exactly those people. It was delivered at
CHI's Istanbul office in partnership with CAWST, the Centre for Affordable Water
and Sanitation Technology, whose work on household water treatment and safe storage
has shaped WASH practice across dozens of countries.

Over two days the group worked through the fundamentals: what WASH actually covers,
how water quality is assessed and treated, the sanitation options available under
field constraints, and why hygiene promotion succeeds or fails on community
engagement rather than hardware.

The training was capped at a small group so that every participant could take part
in discussion and practical exercises rather than sit through presentations.
